When you want to step away from the hassles in Chiang Mai city center , visiting Mae Kam Pong village is a perfect destination. Whether just a few hours or staying overnight in one of the home stays, you have no problem experiencing a simple way of life that you will fall in love.
Located in Chiang Mai, the northern province of Thailand, less than an hour drive from the city center. This village is tucked away on the hillside of the mountain surrounded by the forest with only one main road passing through the village.

As you walk through the main road, you can’t help but feel that time seems to move slowly here at Mae Kam Pong village.
My favorite part is the food vendors along the main road. They sell typical Northern Thailand snacks like sour pork , grilled sweet sticky rice and sausage. They are very friendly and love talking to visitors. One villager told me that during the weekend, the road and traffic can back up because of limited parking spot. If you want to avoid the crowd, it’s a good idea to come during weekdays and during the day.
As you step inside the village, you’ll be greeted by the luscious green and the soothing sound of the stream running through the middle of the village.
Even though the village is welcome the travelers ,the villagers are still trying to keep the old charm of country life. Many of the houses have been converted to a home-stay while still maintaining the rustic feel to it. If you want to immerge yourself in Mae Kam Pong’s way of life, you can spend a night or two here with the residents. They will show you a good hospitality and good meal.
When it’s time to leave Mae Kam Pong , one thought that stuck in my mind was
“Sometimes simple thing is all you need”
How to get to Mae Kam Pong
Mae Kam Pong is 50 km from Chiang Mai City Center with easy one hour drive. The road is 2 lane road and up hill as you get close to the mountain.
Cost: Free
Best Time to Go: All year round. Weekdays and during the day are best to go since weekends can get very crowded.
Parking: Parking is limited. There is a parking lot once you enter the village. Also a small parking space at the temple on the top of the hill.
What to Do: Besides chilling and sipping coffee at the village. If you are looking for something more to do. You can also hike to Mae Kam Pong waterfall. Try zip line adventure at Flight of the Gibbon
